Fort Christian was constructed by the Danish government between 1666 and 1680 and is named after King Christian V, the king of Denmark and Norway from 1670 to 1699. The fort is the oldest standing structure in the U.S. Virgin Islands and has served as a town center, a government building, a Lutheran church and a jail. Since 1972, it has been home to the St. Thomas Museum, which houses exhibits on the history of the Virgin Islands from the Stone Age to present, and also showcases artifacts and art of the Danish period.
