YMCA CAMP ALGONQUIN property is owned by the McHenry County Conservation District and is operated by the YMCA of McHenry County. The Conservation District purchased the 116 acre camp in July 2004. The camp has been in existence since 1907 and was previously owned by Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago. Three Chicago high school students drowned in the Fox River in November 2008 while using paddleboats in the middle of the night.
