Wat Nakhon Kosa

Thailand / Lop Buri /
 temple, ancient ruins

Wat Nakorn Kosa, (TH วัดนครโกษา), is located in Tambon Tha Hin, Amphoe Mueang Lopburi, Chang Wat Lopburi, Thailand.

Wat Nakorn Kosa was once a Khmer place of worship. The ancient ruins of this temple had suffered destruction and had fallen into neglect for many years. The large chedi was built during the Devaravadi Period. The Ubosot and the Vihara (Wihan) were built during the reign of King Narai the Great. The Prang was built in the Ayutthaya Period during the late 18th century Buddhist Century. The other Prang was also built and restored during the reign of King Narai the Great. Presumably, Chao Phraya Kosathibodi (Lek) could have been the one who renovated this temple. Therefore, it was named "Wat Nakorn Kosa".
From 1987-1988, there were excavations at the base of the large Chedi during which sculptures of the Devaravadi Period, including Buddha images, human figures, architectural art and terracotta were found and subsequently exhibited at Somdej Phra Narai National Museum, Lopburi Province.
The Fine Arts Department acclaimed and registered this ancient site on the 2nd August 1936.
