Florida Theater (Jacksonville, Florida)

USA / Florida / Jacksonville / Jacksonville, Florida

In April 1900, the City bought the old Togni Hotel property near the southwest corner of Forsyth and Newnan Streets and converted this building into a new police station. Barely a year later, the building was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1901. After the fire, the City acquired additional property adjacent to the former station and constructed this larger building shown above. This Jacksonville Police Building opened on April 26, 1902 (on the site of what is now the Florida Theatre, which was built in 1926-27)

The Florida Theater is one of only four remaining high-style movie palaces built during the Mediterranean Revival architectural boom of the 1920s. www.floridatheatre.com/
