It was built by the Gyulay family in 1641 on the left bank of the Mureș River. Count Lajos Gyulay remodeled it in 1834 in a classicist style according to the plans of the architect Stuller. Today it is the largest classicist castle in Transylvania.
During the Revolution and the War of Independence of 1848-49, it was damaged by Romanian insurgents.
Count Géza Kuún (1838–1905), a historian and orientalist, lived here and created a rich archive and library in the building.
