castle, park, Neoclassical (architecture), 17th century construction, 19th century construction
It was built by the Gyulay family in 1641 on the left bank of the Mureș River. Count Lajos Gyulay remodeled it in 1834 in a classicist style according to the plans of the architect Stuller. Today it is the largest classicist castle in Transylvania.
During the Revolution and the War of Independence of 1848-49, it was damaged by Romanian insurgents.
Count Géza Kuún (1838–1905), a historian and orientalist, lived here and created a rich archive and library in the building.
