Schwartz Castle (Columbus, Ohio)

USA / Ohio / Columbus / Columbus, Ohio / South Third Street, 492
 house, interesting place

Schwartz Castle is an interesting local landmark in German Village. From the street it looks like a three story brick mansion with an octagonal lookout tower, but it is also rumored to have a five story basement and a dark history.

According to material from the property management company it was built in 1896, although another source says it was built in the mid-19th century. In 1914 it became the Columbus Maternity Hospital, but the property was allowed to deteriorate and by the 1950s it was used as a rooming house. It was renovated in the 1980s and is now split into a condo on the top 2 floors and offices on the lower 2 floors.

  • The website, "ForgottonOhio.com", says that the original owner constructed secret passages throughout the mansion. This is also confirmed by materials from the property management company, which describe a den (located between the second and third floors) which features a "moveable bookcase that opens onto the hallway below" and a "one-way mirror looking onto the conservatory."
