The Joseph-Volokolamksky Monestary of The Assumption (The Joseph-Volotsky Monastery) is a Russian Orthodox men's monastery (only men are allowed in it). The Monastery was founded in 1479 St. Joseph in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of Christ. The monastery was rebuilt a few times, the one today being built in 1688-1696 in a Muscovite Baroque style. Many other structures and churches were added to the monastery over the years. During the early 17th-century Russian-Polish war, the church was a temporary prison for holding Polish prisoners-of-war, and during the War of 1812, French P.O.W.s. From 1777 through 1823, there was a school for children who would later become priests. Before the 1917 Revolution, the monastery used to have many market stalls and bazaars to feed off of passer-byes. After the revolution, the Soviets shut down the monastery, and it was reopened almost 80 years later in 1990.
