It is choice not chance that determines your destiny.
The goal of education is not to award degrees only, it is to groom the young people of the country in such a manner that they make their contribution to the progress of society to which they belong. The institutions of higher education, therefore, have to provide the all round development of the disseminate knowledge, promote skills and develop a positive frame of mind so as to produce young persons who are intellectually sensitive, socially committed and economically self-reliant.
The foremost feature of our education system should be to train the youth to see the good in every human being and to take the best out of each individual potential. The initiation of the youth into education is called in Sankrit as “Upa-Nayan”, the second sight. Knowledge is called the ‘Third-eye’ in many systems of philosophy. The real education is described in a famous Tamil work as follows:
“That which is not destroyed by fire,
Not submerged by flood,
Not wiped off by epidemics,
Not shaken by explosions,
Not stolen by thieves,
Is preserved for ever,
Only in our minds and memories”
We have to search our own conscience and say whether our education system fulfills the above standards. The mantra of success is discipline, self-control and self-restraint. Discipline is no obstacle, it is a freedom. It creates freedom. You have freedom, must have freedom to create yourself. Discipline will help you realize yourself. It is like the wheels of a vehicle. They are free yet bound to a law, bound to move in regulated manner. Each wheel of the car moves in a togetherness of motion. It is this unity, this discipline that moves the car.
The college is like this car. We are its wheels. The college will help us go where we wish to go: but first create the college. A college is mot merely a place where we come, spend a few years and leave and forget. It is an integral, vital part of our life. Our discipline and self-control will help it move us ahead.
