Built in 1863 to serve the largest community of Chinese north of Sacramento, this temple of treasures is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also as a California Landmark. It was first opened to visitors during California's 1949 Centennial. Although it is now a museum, it is still an active temple and used occasionally for worship.
There is a plaque that reads:

CHINESE TEMPLE
Dedicated in the spring of 1863, this building served
as a temple of worship for 10,000 Chinese then
living here. Funds for its erection and furnishings
were provided by the Emperor and Empress
of China and local Chinese labor built the
structure. The building was deeded to the City
of Oroville in 1935 by the Chinese residents.

LANDMARK NO. 770
Plaque placed by the California State Park Commission
in cooperation with the Oroville Woman's Community Club.
