Davol Mills (Fall River, Massachusetts)

USA / Massachusetts / Somerset / Fall River, Massachusetts / Plymouth Avenue, 427
mill, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 1860s construction, Second Empire (architecture), 1871_construction

Opened by a member of the prominent Davol Family in 1867 and 1871, the two Davol Mills were different from most mills in the city; instead of being the traditional Italianate style in Fall River granite, they were built in the Second Empire style of red brick. Of the four large mill complexes that once stood at the intersection of Rodman and Plymouth, it is the only one still fully intact; the Tecumseh Mills and Robeson Mills were demolished in the latter twentieth century for retail space, and Borden Mill No. 1 was destroyed by fire in November of 2001 (though Borden Mill No. 2 and Tecumseh Mill No. 1, both set back from the corner, still exist).

The mills were added to the NRHP in 1983 as part of the Corky Row Historic District.
