mill, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places
The original Granite Mill Number 1 was built in 1864 in the block between Bedford and Pleasant, and Twelfth and Thirteenth streets. Its destruction in an 1874 fire led to better fire escape access to future mills, including the three built in the complex.
The second Mill No. 1 was rebuilt in 1875 on the site, but was demolished in 1961, originally replaced by the China Royal Restaurant, a local landmark Chinese restaurant. That, too, closed, today replaced by a CVS/Pharmacy, Bank Five, and a Boston Market, along with the gas station built along Bedford Street that was built at the same time as China Royal.
Mill No. 2 was built near the corner of Robeson and Bedford. It was eventually sold to Pepperell Manufacturing, and for many years was also home to Anderson Little. Today it is mostly smaller businesses, including a visiting nurse association headquarters.
Mill No. 3 would eventually become Globe Manufacturing Company, with a more modern entryway added on after its sale. Globe made rubber goods, including elastic waistbands and the like. It would close eventually, its operations moved to Gastonia, North Carolina.
The entire complex was deemed eligible for addition to the NRHP in 1983, but the owner objected to its inclusion on grounds that it would not benefit the property economically.
