The Fall River Bleachery was founded in 1872 by a group of investors led by Spencer Borden, a chemist and son of one of the members of the powerful industrial Borden family. He found that the water of the Sucker Brook was the purest and most plentiful available in the city for the purposes of providing a water supply for a bleachery. The company expanded over the years, but declined with the rest of the industry in the twentieth century, with parts of the complex burning in 1967. It was added to the NRHP in 1983.

Lately, the site has been under consideration for a possible unified site for the Atlantis Charter School.
