  • Used to be operated by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (large brass memorial to L&YR staff killed in WWs on entrance wall). More of the past survives here than at Piccadilly Station - it's also far less crowded. Thousands of chlorea victims under eastern platforms - c.1840's - this used to be the Walker's Croft burial ground for the Manchester Workhouse which was just N. of the station. Rather spoiled by being modified in c.1995 to serve as the entrance for the MEN Arena. You used to go under the platforms by means of a ramp and underpass - this has now been replaced by an overly elaborate system of staircases/lifts over the platforms which takes about four times longer and requires about ten times the expenditure of effort.
