The Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary (Grunta)

Czech Republic / Stredocesky / Grunta / Grunta, 1
 church, basilica, Roman Empire

The church of Assumption of Virgin Mary in Grunta was built during the years 1905-1908 by proposal of architects Rudolph and Jaroslav Vomacka from Prague. The construction was made from the Horice red sandstone and it is conceived as a pseudo-Romanesque three nave basilica, surprising by massive dimensions. Very valuable Art Nouveau wall paintings were created by painters - spouses F. and M. Urban (pupils from famous painter Alfons Mucha) as well as stained glass windows. The interiors of the temple were suggested by Joseph Kastner and Kamil Hilbert, great architects of the time, between others co-workers of finishing of the building of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, or St. Barbara Cathedral in Kutna Hora. As a stonecutter apprentice worked here later President of Czechoslovac Republic Mr. Antonin Zapotocky. In the northern tower is located a very old bell of 2nd middle of the 15th century.
