John Hamlin Burnell established his Albion Ale & Porter Brewing company here in 1870 on the site of a spring. Burnell had two stone cisterns dug into the hillside, with approximately 10,000 gallons of water produced per day, for his operation. He died in 1890, and his wife and son continued operating the brewery until its closure in 1919 due to Prohibition.

Sculptor Adrien Alexander Voisin bought the property in 1938. Using old photographs and drawings, Voisin restored the main building's stonework to its original quality and used the premises as a residence and studio. The San Francisco Mountain Springs Water Company purchased the water rights from Voisin, and eventually the brewery itself, but allowed him to live here until his death.

Albion Castle became San Francisco Landmark #60 in 1974.
