 heritage, road bridge

The original bridge was designed by 'Charles Piens', an engineer at the service roads and bridges. The construction was made of steel and the running boards got a finish. The bridge consisted of two parts: the actual swing, the pivot on a brick pillar and a fixed bridge rested on half pillar rested. On the right bank, two large Gothic Revival houses built for the bridge-turners.

In 1994 they started the construction of the current 'Herdersbrug'. The new bridge has a concrete substructure comprising a fixed abutment, a fixed bridge, a central pillar and a basement where the abutment steel bridge over vertical runs.
After the restoration the old bridge was moved to the premises of 'Electrabel' near the new Herdersbrug.
