The Van Brienenoordbrug is a twelve lane wide bridge connecting Rotterdam to the south of the Netherlands. With the E19 going over it, known locally as the A16, it is one of Europe's busiest highway tracks, although it is also open to bicycles. The bridge as originally built in 1965 consisted of only one arch, but as traffic continued to increase, it was decided to double the bridge's capacity by placing a second arch next to it, 15 centimeters downstream, and still spanning 287.5 meters. The new bridge entered service on May 1st, 1990.
Ships up to 24 meters high pass under the bridge. But the Maas (also known as Meuse abroad, but actually Rhine water) is a busy river. Traffic is halted and the bridge opens to allow higher ships to pass approximately 500 times a year. This takes at least 18 minutes each time, and is done remotely from a control center in Rhoon.
