Sangwansa was built the Buddhist monk Ja Jang in 643, or by Bocheon and Hyo-myeong, the sons of King Sin-Mun. The oldest relic left today is Dongjong, the 91cm diameter Sangwonsa Dongjong (temple bell) was cast in 725.

Dongjong is famous for its beautiful bell sound, and the delicately carved Juakbicheon figure, but is now slient to preserve the bell. On the top, the hook of the bell is carved in the shape of a dragon with a large head and strong claws. The bell is decorated with patterns of lotus flowers and vines. Wide bands around the rim and shoulder, and below the shoulder band, and four panels each containing nipple-like lotus flowers in high relief arond the bell. The bands and the frames of the panels are bordered with pearl patterns and decorated with vine patterns with several music playing figures.

Sets of two apsaras (heavenly maidens) are kneeling on clouds and playing musical instruments carved in two face places around the center. Between the apsaras, dangjwa (the striking point) is decorated with a pearl and lotus flower patterns.

Dongjong is designated National Treasure #36.
