Scargill Castle was originally a late 12th or early 13th century stone fortified manor house, founded by Warren de Scargill. A defensible tower stood in the south-east angle of a small walled courtyard. It later declined from a main residence to an estate farm. There followed a brief but extensive rebuilding of the castle into a more fashionable Tudor house, before a final long decline into a ruined state and use as farm buildings.
