A 20-car derailment, including four tank cars carrying HAZMAT, at milepost 26.1 near Marriottsville, MD on December 15, 2006.
The derailed cars included a tank car loaded with Anhydrous Ammonia, a very dangerous inhalent hazard if released into the atmosphere. As a precaution, 100 people were evacuated within a one-mile radius of the derailment.
The Federal Railroad Administration determined that the derailment was caused by downed and dragging brake rigging on the 28th car.
