The village of Asthall goes back to Roman times, when a settlement existed just east of the present day built up area, with houses on both sides of Akeman Street, the great paved road from Bicester to Cirencester. Recent archeological investigations suggest the current meander of the river Windrush was only beginning to form back then. This would have been a factor when the road was planned.
