abandoned / shut down, foundation, road bridge
A road bridge was built here in 1923, providing a direct road connection between Florence and Marion for the first time. The site of the bridge was determined in part because it was one of the few places on the west bank of the river which featured high bluffs and not swamps, eliminating the need for a long causeway on the western approach. The road over this bridge eventually became U.S. 17 and, later, U.S. 76/301. This bridge was abandoned for the more direct but "swampier" crossing a mile and a half upstream, which is still in use today.
On the Florence County side, the old 76/301 is now Dupont Drive. On the Marion County side, it is now Jake's Hill Road.
