fortification, historic landmark
Established 26 June 1856, the fort was named for Colonel Daniel Randall, former Deputy Paymaster General of the Army. The fort provided protection to settlers and explorers travelling through the area, in addition to keeping settlers from trespassing on Native American reservations. It was the last link in a chain of forts protecting the overland route along the Platte River, as well as the first fort in a chain of forts along the Missouri River. Sitting Bull, legendary chief of the Sioux Nation, was held prisoner at Fort Randall from July 1881 until November 1883.
The fort was closed on 09 November 1892.
