The old fort of Meetei Kings whose Ningthouja dynasty emerged in 33 A.D and lasted till 1891. In 1891, five British officers including Mr. Quinton, the Chief Commissioner of Assam were beheaded and their heads were buried here. In the ensuing battle, the British won. The King and his general were hung at the place where today'a Sahid Minar is situated.
The entire Kangla (fort) was controlled by British till independence, and then by the Assam Rifles. Kangal was handed over to the public in 2004. Now, the Manipuri government is restoring historic structures.
