Started in 1908, Philippe's is famous for originating the French Dip sandwich and has remained extremely popular in Los Angeles.

  • Cole's P.E. Buffet (The oldest restaurant in Los Angeles) also claims to have originated the French Dipped Sandwich.
  • they do concentrate on the basics here: the sandwich consists of bread dipped in meat juice, beef (or lamb, turkey...) and nothing else. You can get cheese if you pay extra but no cole slaw / tomato / lettuce / cucumber / onions - nothing. I like it that way but be aware that they serve food for your stomach, not for your eyes.
