The large main building was designed by architect Albert C. Martin and constructed in 1908 as A. Hamburger and Sons, one of the first department stores to operate in Los Angeles.

May Department Stores acquired Hamburger's in 1923 and renamed it The May Company. They constructed the tall addition on the south and west side in 1929, designed by architect Aleck Curlett.

The May Company left this store in 1986 for a new shopping center downtown at Citicorp Plaza. More recently, it has housed numerous small businesses. In the lats 2010s, plans were announced for it to be rebuilt as a combination shopping center, hotel and offices. However, the economic downturn of the neighborhood during COVID-19 seems to have paused those plans.
