municipality, interesting place, draw only border

Cognac is a well-preserved small riverside town and centre of brandy production and retail town of local maize wines, in particular Pineau de Charante. It is on one of the pilgrims' roads leading to St Jago/James de la Compostela in Galicia, Spain from the bulk of northern Europe, certainly west of Paris. It also lay at the crossroads between the westerly town of Saintes versus the south-central plateau region of Limousin accessed via Angouleme to the east. Saintes, on a good source of water, referred to St Eutropius to whom one of the routes was dedicated.
