Location of landslide in January 2008 which resulted in the displacement of two homes. A large portion of the embankment near the top of the slope (left side of the polygon) gave way and slid towards the homes below (right side of the polygon and still visible in this photo). The occupants were ordered to evacuate immediately. They were able to remove most of their posessions from their homes over the next few weeks, but were never able to move back in. The homes were purchased and demolished by the PA Turnpike Commission, which owns the Mon-Fayette Expressway adjacent to the slope. The embankment was constructed as part of the Mon-Fayette Expressway construction only a few years prior to the slide. The PA Turnpike Commission has experienced a number of geotechnical problems with the Mon-Fayette expressway between I-70 and PA 51 since its opening in April 2002. Eventhough the slide was partially stabilized, it is still easily visible to northbound motorists on the Mon-Fayette expressway about a mile north of the Charleroi interchange.
