Designed by architect Albert H. Jordan of Detroit in the Renaissance Revival style MacKenzie Hall was the 4th Courthouse to be located on the site. It was built in 1855 by contractor Alexander MacKenzie out of limestone and served as the County Courthouse until 1963. Alexander MacKenzie later became the 2nd Prime Minister of Canada in 1873.
After serving as offices for Essex County the building was vacated in the 1970s. It was purchased by the City of Windsor in 1981 and restored. In 1985 the newly christened MacKenzie Hall was opened as a community and cultural centre administered by the Parks & Recreation Department. It is the home of numerous cultural groups including the Purple Theatre.
