Erected on the site of the historic Sandwich Goal in 1926, it is 3 storeys high and surrounded by 20 feet high cement walls. Originally designed to accomodate 101 inmates, the capacity of the jail is now 147 as a result of expansions undertaken over time.

In 1982 the Jail moved its administrative offices into the old Land registry Office building located to the south-west of the jail. The Registry Office was designed by Detroit architect William Lloyd in the Romanesque Revival manner.

In 2008 provincial authorities announced that a new jail facility is to be build near Highway 401 and Walker Road and the present jail abandoned.
