SS Cape Juby (AK-5077)

USA / Virginia / Rushmere /
ship, United States Navy, military reserve force

Laid down in 1962 for States Lines as the commercial steamship SS Hawaii, this ship plied the commercial trades for States Lines until 1976 when she was sold Moore McCormack Lines and renamed the Mormacsaga. She was eventually turned over to MARAD in 1980 and converted to a US Navy Ammunition Supply Ship, and formed part of the four member Cape J Class of Modular Cargo Delivery Ships with her sisterships.

Serving out of Wilmington, NC for 23 years, the Cape Juby made several deployments in support of US Naval Forces, including the 1st Gulf War and the run up to the Second Gulf War before she was deactivated by the Navy and relocated to the Reserve Fleet. After a brief period layberthed at Alameda, the Cape Juby was relocated here to the James River Fleet at Fort Eustis where she remained in ROS-10 status, meaning she could be ready for deployment in 10 days or less.

As her sisterships were steadily withdrawn from reseve fleet service, the Cape Juby was withdrawn from the RRF and placed into Category D Reserve as a Logistics Support Asset, otherwise known as a parts hulk.
