city, county seat
Town with a population of 3,496 at the 2000 census. County seat of Williamsburg County. Originally laid out as Williamsburg by the Lords Proprietors in the early colonial era.
A tall local tree in the town was marked as the king's property because it was suitable for a ship's mast. The tree was never cut and became a local landmark. The town was renamed The King's Tree after it, and the name eventually became Kingstree.
