This temple has many centuries old Yoga Narasimha deity. This mutt is 600 years old and has a wonderful history of having knowledgeable seers. This is primary temple and mutt for Panchagrama Brahmins. By looking at the architectural structure of this temple, it may be assumed that the temple is older than Hoysala era. Comparing this temple architecture with Koodli temple near shimoga, the similarities of Koodli Narasimha temple, which is under control of Madwa group of Brahmins and this temple, under control of panchagrama brahmins can be established. Hence it can be believed that this temple is older than Adi Shankaracharya era, ie. 9th century. The legend says that the difference of opinion by a group of Dwaita (Madwa) bramins about Dwaita theory, whose argument was that Body ( Deha) and Soul(Atmam)are equally important, led to a new sub group of Brahimins. Later they departed from original Dwaitha(Madwa) group and established their own temple at Shankaranarayana and at Tirthamuttur. This group of Brahmins established themselves in Five villages. Hence the name Pancha Gramha Brahmins came up. As the time went on these Brahmins become followers of HH. Adi shankarcharya, and a mutt was established in 14th centaury under inspiration of HH. Sri Vidyaranya swamiji of Sringeri mutt. However, the Brahmins of this mutt keeps equal faith in Eswara and Vishnu( Shankar Narayana), or in other terms Dwaita (Madwa) and Advaita (Smartha) rituals, which is very rarely followed by other group of Brahmins. The temple has a Yoga Narasimha deity and Mahalakshmi deity inside Garba Gudi. The deities of Eswara, Anjaneya,Rama and Krishna are also worshiped in this temple. There is an ancient Eswara temple about 1km. from this temple. It is general belief that any long dieses /illness will be cured by praying to this god, which is unknown to majority of the people in this location.
The Yoga Narasimha temple is surrounded a beautiful westward flowing Tunga river, dense forests and areca nut farms. Tirthamuttur is located 21kms from Tirthahalli and 32 Kms. from Sringeri, well connected by road
