Commissioned in 1938, the Boksitogorsk Alumina Refinery is located in Boksitogorsk, the Leningrad region, 240 kilometres from St. Petersburg. During the Second World War the machines and equipment in the smelter were dismantled and moved to the Urals region. The original equipment was returned from the Urals and recommissioned at Boksitogorsk in 1954.
In 2009, the refinery’s output was 131,000 tonnes of alumina and 64,200 tonnes of corundum products. The refinery supplies the majority of the corundum consumed in Russia and it also exports corundum products to other countries.

60% of its electricity demand is satisfied with power supplied by ОАО Lenenergo, while the remaining 40% of electricity and 100% of heat comes from the refinery’s own heat and power plant. The refinery employs approximately 1,800 people and became part of UC RUSAL in January 2005.
