military, cemetery, prison

U.S. Government-maintained cemetery contains the remains of several hundred Confederate POWs who died while held at the infamous Johnson's Island POW Camp.
While Union prisoners in Andersonville and other southern prisons had to endure starvation and Georgia summer heat, Confederate prisoners here had to endure Lake Erie winters with virtually no warm clothing or proper shelter. Hundreds died here, mainly from disaease, but the remains of many were shipped home or retreived by loved ones after the war.
