  In the 1960s into the 70's I loved the old location of Kepler's books, which was across the street from its present location. A little "hole-in-the-wall" place that was a popular hangout for beatniks, then hippies. The store prided itself with its inventory of paperback books. It exclusively carried paperback books, and not hardbound books. I recall one time I phoned the store and asked for a particular book title I needed for a college class [1976]. The female clerk said, in a surly tone: "that sounds like a hardback book to me, we DON'T carry hardbacks here! Try another store!" I took no offense to her surly attitude. Instead, I found it amusing. LOL
