Science Classroom Building (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

USA / Minnesota / Minneapolis / Minneapolis, Minnesota / Pleasant Street SE, 222
university, classroom, historical layer / disappeared object

Currently being demolished.

As its name suggests, this building was composed mostly of science classrooms. The main level had 2 large open rooms for eating or study, while the large theater style classrooms were on the floors below. Though functional, the early 1960s building was deemed too unnattractive for its riverfront location near the Washington Ave bridge, so the University decided to replace it with a new Science Teaching and Student Services Center. The new building should be open by fall 2010 and will cost an estimated $72.5 million. The new facility will have only half the classroom space of the old structure.

The chemistry department, which holds many of its large lectures in the building, will relocate to Anderson Hall across the river during construction.
