residence, estate (manor / mansion land), retreat center (spiritual)
The current complex of 'Black Forest' style buildings was largely built for William Randolf Hearst by the architect Julia Morgan during the 1930s. Hearst's mother Phoebe Apperson Hearst (3 December 1842 – 13 April 1919) had owned this secluded property and had built a rustic lodge/castle with attendant buildings in the 'hunting lodge' style. The main building was destroyed by fire in the early 1930s requiring the reconstruction by Morgan. "Wyntoon" stems from a Native American tribe called Wintu.
The property is now owned by the Hearst Corporation.
