Chokepoint where Interstates 805 and 5 come together. The problem isn't necessarily with the merge itself but with the fact that the freeway goes from 10+ lanes down to four in a very short distance, creating horrendous back-up traffic.

CalTrans is currently widening I-5 north of here - including extra lanes as well as HOV lanes - all the way into Camp Pendleton.

  • The Local Bypass project is now complete, as of April 2007.
  • The term The Merge is very outdated. Reality has Renamed it for what it Really is, The Mousetrap You arrive There and SNAP goes the trap, You're stuck. Dead. Going Nowhere. If you drive a Manual transmission, this means you NEVER get out of 1st gear.
