Museums Building (Modena)

Italy / Emilia-Romagna / Modena / Largo Porta Sant'Agostino
 museum, interesting place

The Civic Museums are located in a building that was constructed between 1764 and 1771 upon the wishes of Duke Francis III of Este. Originally the location of the Ducal Armoury, then of the Albergo dei Poveri (Hospice for the Poor), and later of the Albergo delle Arti (Hotel of the Arts) with factories and plants, the building was purchased in 1881 by the Municipality of Modena for the purpose of housing the cultural institutions of the city. Since that time it has been called the “Palazzo dei Musei” (Museums Building).
