This field is made of brown sand. It is extremely difficult to play a game on. They are called the Tornados in reference to the fierce whirlwinds that blow across the dry lake bed every hot afternoon.

  • Funny story about Trona football... and possibly a secret to playing the team on their home field. The football team representing my kids' high school travelled to Trona several years back to play the Tornadoes. I didn't go. Trona won the game, due in large part to the Saints' many fumbles and unexplainable dropped passes. After the game, as they met to shake hands, the Trona coach underhanded a football to our coach - a rubber football! The visiting Saints used their leather footballs during the game, which, when covered with dust from the playing field, were ungrippable! The rubber balls, on the other hand (pun intended), could be gripped and caught by the Trona players! I'd say that's making the most of a "home field advantage"!?! I admire the kids, coaches and everyone else who follows Trona football - it's truly love of the game if you play it under those conditions. JFH
