The Golden Fire Hydrant (San Francisco, California)

USA / California / San Francisco / San Francisco, California
 memorial, hydrant

In the days after the 1906 earthquake, much of the city was in flames and the conflagration was moving south into the Mission District. The hydrant at 20th and Church is credited (along with several thousand volunteers and a handful of firemen) with saving the day and, arguably, the city itself. Every year on the anniversary of the quake, the grateful denizens of San Francisco give it a fresh coat of gold paint.
