233 Ordnance Detachment : Weapons Store
Tirosh, located off Route 38, is reportedly one of two Israeli nuclear weapons storage facilities. It is speculated that that Tirosh is the strategic weapons storage site, while Eilabun is the tactical weapons storage site. It is reported that the facility consists of a network of roads linking approximately 70 bunkers, each spaced about 25 yards apart. Other reports suggest that nuclear weapons are stored at the larger bunkers on the north side of this site. The facility is surrounded by a perimeter road and security fences. The facility is close to both the Tel Nof Air Base and the Sedot Mikha missile garrison.
Declassified CORONA imagery from 1971 reveals a probable weapons storage facility in this area. This facility appears to be configured for the storage of explosives, consisting of a network of roads linking approximately 75 storage bunkers. The facility does not feature the robust security perimeter that would normally be expected to be associated with the storage of nuclear weapons. Given the small size of Israel's nuclear arsenal in 1971, it is possible that as of this date nuclear weapons had not yet been deployed at this facility.
