Chartreuse Fortress (Liège)

The fort was built by the Dutch occupants in early 1800 and came in the hands of the Belgian state after the declaration of independence in 1830. The total area is about 30 acres.
During the first and second world wars, the old fortress was used a prison by the Germans.

At the end of WWII, La Chartreuse served as a military hospital for the American forces. Since 1983 the fortress has been completely abandoned. Nature has taken it back slowly. Trees are growing through the roofs.

Today the fortress is used by the Airsoft-Community and called 'the Maze'.
