Chonwang Gate, dating to 1042, is the last of the three ceremonial gates once used to enter the temple. "Ch'ŏnwang" means "heavenly kings", and refers to the four buddhist deities of the same name; statues of the four are housed inside the gate, and are believed to ward off evil.
