  • Gentleness: Although many students like to think of Daosim as “do whatever you like” religion because there are no “rules” or “commandments” and everything is “relative,” as with all other religions we are studying this semester, the emphasis in Daoism is on being non-violent and gentle. In fact, one beautiful passage in the Tao Te Ching states “Weapons are instruments of fear; all creatures hate them” and “If you rejoice in victory, then you delight in killing; if you delight in killing, then you cannot fulfill yourself.” (trans. Jane English). So, followers of the Dao do not advocate violence in any way and are all about peace. Wu Wei: This is an interesting term which gets translated as something like “effortless effort.” What it means is that no unnecessary effort needs to be added to the naturalness of life itself. Again, it is a paradoxical term but has truth to it. Consider sports, for example. Have you ever heard of someone being in “the zone”? I have heard it described as a euphoric feeling where everything is just “right” or “natural” and there doesn’t seem to be much thought about what one is doing. In fact, just like the Dao, most students who have claimed to have been “in the zone,” can’t really describe it (it is beyond words) but they definitely have felt it. I have also talked to artists, dancers, and musicians who say the same basic thing. I have been a guitar player since I was about 12, and I know that when I play (usually with my eyes closed), I am totally in the zone. I don’t need to think about what I am doing, and it feels like the guitar is playing itself and I am just “there.” This is the concept of Wu Wei. Like water, life flows without one adding extra thoughts, concepts, stress, etc. The more you can “just be” the more you will ultimately be one with the Dao.
