The Buda Landscape Protection Area was created in 1978 in order to protect valuable natural assets. The area is full of botanical rarities. In the habitat of the dolomite or limestone base rock primarily downy oak, flowering ash, and dwarf beech can be found. Among the native plants seseli (Seseli leucospermum), Buda moor grass (Sesleria sadleriana Janka), Vincetoxicum pannonicum are of particular interest. The Pilis flax (Linum dolomiticum) is found only in the Hay Hills (Szénás-hegység).

The fauna of the area is similarly rich in species. Characteristic species at grass level are Desert ant (Cataglyphis bicolor), predatory bush cricket (Saga Pedo) and the Stenobothrus eurasius. Valuable amongst the vertebrates are the snake-eyed skink (Ablepharus kitaibelii) and the whip snake (Coluber caspius). Among the birds, the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) and the raven (Corvus corax) have become increasingly common in the last few years. Rare bat species live in the caves and crevices.
