Hamntorget (Harbour Square) is a square in central Gävle. Built around 1870 it was the fishermen's market until the 1950's. Nowadays it serves as a bus station. The square was rebuilt in the early 2000's and the canal, which was filled in the 1960's, was partly restored.

  • This may be the square where the giant straw goat, the Gavlebocken, is built wach year about December 1st. Half the groups in the city build and protect the Goat and the other half try to burn it down before Christmas. It usually burns early. This year it has been soaked with water and allowed to freeze. I guess they have not heard of thermite. Large bets are made on if and when it will burn. There is even a web camera for the World to watch.
