New Rochelle Municipal Marina is located off Echo Bay. The 5.3-acre marina, one of the largest on Long Island Sound, currently contains 100 moorings and 500 berths, 55 of which accommodate vessels longer than 30 feet. Services include launching and hauling, winter boat storage, and Mobile and stationary marine pump out services. Amenities include a laundry room, bathrooms with showers, vending and ice machines and marine supplies, within walking distance to local entertainment, and grocery stores. The marina offers the closest affordable dockage to New York City which is just 16 miles away.
The well-protected harbors of New Rochelle serve ten other private yacht clubs and marinas which house more than 2,000 pleasure boats. Echo Bay Yacht Club and Polychron Marina are located in Echo Bay. The New York Athletic Club, Huguenot Yacht Club, Neptune Boat Club, Castaways Yacht Club, Imperial Yacht Club, Wright Island Marina and Mill Pond Cove Marina are located in the Lower Harbor of the city.
The Marina is located on Ferris Creek, the site once occupied by the New Rochelle Coal and Lumber Company. In 1945, the city acquired the site for use as a municipal marina. From 1945 -57 the Marina enjoyed continued improvements which helped transform the the City into a boating center. These improvements included the construction of a boat house and bulkheads, the grading and paving of the dock area, the dredging of Ferris Creek and the construction of new piers and slips to accommodate small boats. Ten years later, A marina study was undertaken in August of 1967 to determine the easiest manner in which the boat center could be modernized. As a result, a total of $2.3 million was spent to make the marina one of the finest in this part of the United States. The expense was borne by the City of New Rochelle, assisted in part by a $1.6 million New York State grant under the Harbor and Refuge Act.
Facilities:
The modern marina contains innovations for minimum maintenance and for the comfort of boaters. Each boat owner, for example, has exclusive use of sizable dock boxes. An easily accessible service channel on each float contains the three phase 110 and 220 volt power cables, fresh water lines, telephone cables and compressed air lines. The marina also provides a 24 hour year-round watchman service, United States Weather Bureau storm warning displays, a base for the New Rochelle Harbor Police, which operates three boats during the boating season, and a point of departure for those who keep their boats in the nearby Echo Bay Harbor moorings.
The basic flotation consists of specially designed fiberglass pontoons. These pontoons are filled with polyeurathane foam thus precluding any loss of flotation from damage or swamping. The foam is completely resistant to oil, gasoline, or other solvents. A galvanized utility stand provides deck lighting, water and electricity for each boat over 18 feet and supports the mooring ring for the pilings. These pilings are constructed of greenheart, a dense wood indigenous to British Guiana. This wood resists borers and rotting without the need of unsightly creosote. A 80-by-24-foot fuel float marks the entrance to the marina channel and is attached to the first flotation. The marina has an underground storage capacity of 12,000 gallons of gasoline and 4,000 gallons of diesel oil.
Environmental Improvements:
The New Rochelle Municipal Marina operates the Sound Shore area’s only ‘Clean Green’ and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible facility. The Marina installed a stationary pumpout system, which not only services the approximate 3,000 boats registered at the Marina and other recreational boaters, but also serves as an offload station for the Long Island Soundkeeper pumpout boat, allowing the boat to service boaters in the Long Island Sound waters of Westchester County. The Marina has completed four projects with CVAP grant awards totaling $64,561.
The Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) presented the marina with the "2009 - CVAP Pumpout Excellence Award" based upon its its demonstrated dedication to the Clean Vessel Assistance Program’s goals of protecting and improving water quality throughout Long Island Sound by providing consistent and reliable pumpout service, meeting State and Federal CVAP criteria, providing easily recognizable pumpout information and pumpout service that is readily accessible to boaters, and limiting pumpout usage fees to $5 or less.
Harbormaster Sal Gugliara has implemented a number of additional clean initiatives at the marina, including waste water recycling, storm water filters, shrink wrap/fish line recycling and fuel dock spill rings.
