Speculation Colliery was an early endeavour to get at the deep reserves of coal in the Dean. Not a very successful mine and closed by 1925. The colliery has been long cleared and is now a picnic site although the top of one of the partly filled shafts is still visible in the corner of the meadow surrounded by wire fencing.
